Undercover Heroes

Marianna Morel

Heroes aren’t the ones who are in costumes, the ones who have the biggest muscles; sometimes they could just be the typical ice-cream man. Here’s a story of one of these undercover heroes.

The willingness to overcome the usual cycle of gifted and ill-fated Latinos, who are hidden by the mask of poverty, insecurity and necessity for surviving, it’s what brought me to expand my ideas and awareness of how heroes disguise amidst the clutter. Heroes are often broadcasted in mass media as strong people, with big muscles and long hero capes, but this image of superheroes differs from what my eyes have witnessed.

It returns to me, the memory of Don José. Don José resembles to the bravest and diligent lion, he almost has the strength of a buffalo and the courage of an eagle; an immeasurable toilsome gist. His will to thrive it’s abutted a long road, but regardless of his possible wretched disorientation, his desire to flourish will never diminish. In the brightest noon of one of the warmest summers of Tegucigalpa,

Don José accompanied by his two offsprings, his seven centuries and his humble ice cream cart, comutted throughout the long trail within the bursting slums. Amidst the pathway, his yearnings were following him; in each ice cream he sold, the noble tussle was continually flourishing. His footsteps steered him to the simplest cheerfulness that just undercover heroes comprehend. L.25 a day formed the unattainable dream of Don José.

—”How has the engineer been?”
“They are great, thanks for asking my big friend!” Don José replied with great rejoice.

Don José physically looks immeasurable faint, with his downcast eyes and burned skin, but he’s even stronger than fictional heroes. Undercover heroes roam the streets, giving what little they have, to the little space they own. Nor super strength or ability to fly, but just a genuinely soul and a tender heart. Authentic heroes are like Don Jose, the only ones that exist and without the spirit of a misleading fame, the shielding they yield to their little world is their vast gaiety. What a boon would it be, if I witness undercover heroes on TV…
