They are Ruthlessly Suffering in Dreadful Silence

Trisha Binwade

In today’s world, our world needs to change our women to hide from the horrid dreads of rape. Is this really the right mentality though?

a man that suffers

Rape. The word itself instills suffering and discomfort into our minds. We -as a society- rush to protect the women: we provide as many resources as we can, attempt to bring comfort through helplines, support groups, and some form of flawed legal justice through a flawed system.

We teach our women not to go out too late at night, to check under their cars before getting in, and god forbid they wear anything “provocative”. I know we have all been exposed to this issue as feminism floods the media from time to time. Now let us turn the tables and address an unaddressed issue. How about when the victim is a man?

The paradigm that women are victims and men are the sole perpetrators echoes through society regardless of the fact that at least 38% of all reported rape victims are men. Shielded by the name of feminism, some woman are unknowingly guilty of undermining the problems of sexual assault toward men, but as a society it is impossible to progress towards equality if we are undermining any issues or stereotypes concerning gender based violence, regardless of who falls victim.

Suffering in Silence

The stigmas surrounding male rape only adds to the negative physiological impacts of the traumatic event. “Why weren’t you able to fend for yourself… against a woman?”, an insensitive question most victims who come forward end up hearing at one point. Well, women are statistically more susceptible to using objects as an act of violence, but in the process of fending for himself, imagine he imposes an act of self-defense against the woman. Then go ahead, call the cops, see who is deemed the perpetrator. Men are failed by the system.

The biological response of a man also imposes the question, “Were you aroused?”. When asked to a woman this question would be deemed insensitive, but when the victim is a man, it is just another investigation question. Culturally, most men are taught that any sexual attention from a woman is a gift so when they come front and talk about the issue, they are hit with homophobic slurs and inappropriate questions; they are forced to bury their trauma deeper in their minds.

To top it all off convicted woman, statistically, receive less charges against them when they have left the same mental scars to the male victims. Why does society uphold these double standards? Where are the hotlines, the government funded programs, and the resources for male victims?

It is illogical to compare one genders’ suffering to another; the issue should be tackled as a whole, no aspects ignored. No one should have to fall victim to this dehumanizing crime and feel as if their whole world has been flipped upside down, as if they have had something stolen from them that can never be replaced, and no one should have to suffer in silence.
