The Urge to Fill the Empty Spoon

The Urge to Fill the Empty Spoon

Favour Joshua

What is going on with this nation! Oh, all the things we have to do to make our nation a safe haven. We have to fill the empty spoon.

A Poem: The Urge to Fill The Empty Spoon

Spoon

Have you heard the tale of an empty spoon?
Or listened to the misery of an unused plate?
Do you sometimes wonder if the pot misses the fire?
Or if the bowl desires the scraping?

Many of the tales of wars are untold,
The fatalities they incur.
But could they be skipped,
The brutality of one so common.

Its pangs are real, the stings don’t heal,
A deadly monster, her fangs are deep,
With each claw she tears, she scars,
And yet her name you know not?

She’s a showoff, her presence she announces.
In batches, she issues yawnings,
Gripping tightly, strike two, a gloomy face,
Next, sharp pains in the stomach but she’s only getting started.

I’ve seen men turn monsters for her.
A sly puppeteer, she wars the intestines,
Mother against daughter in exchange for bread,
Son against Father just to feed on some crumbs.

Why busy fighting wars?
When you could build a bakery first.
Exotic convoys for the King?
The people simply want to eat.

We fought the slave traders,
But built the country on the people’s backs.
Each man to his own,
That’s how we sell our own souls.

You never know until you feel it,
The sickening dread, no drug can heal it.
But how can you know the feeling,
When your table boasts a buffet?

Now you’re out there giving speeches,
A hungry crowd, do you expect cheering?
Make the world great again,
Does that include a starving nation?

A penny for a soul, a pound for some flesh,
The placard is large, bare misery is it’s muse.
Screaming “Our Lives Matter,” but the worms protest even louder,
“We matter too” they retort, deeply stinging the intestines.

I only pray and hope it’s not too late,
For this spoonless tale is my only voice,

Before this monster eats us all,
Before all hope is lost and our souls are gone,

Let it be known, I raised my voice,
Let it be known, I told my tale,

For my spoon shall bear me witness.
