The Move to The New Neighbourhood

neigbourhood

It was a quarter past six in the morning. The moon got tired from bragging and let the sun take over, the birds were trying to bring food for their little ones and it was so windy that it almost blew Mr.Ricks’ wig from his head onto the top of a lively evergreen tree. Mr. Rick was one of the best software engineers until he got dementia. He is also the owner of the house Cindy lived in, currently also a neighbour of Sam.

Both Mr.Rick and Sam lost someone precious to them but after moving to a different place, both of them started a new life with a new start and they didn’t know much about each other. Things turned out to be quite pleasant after banning the app that caused so many deaths. But as the old saying goes “Trouble comes knocking on one’s door”, someone was knocking Sams’ door so loud. He went downstairs and opened the door. A male covered with raw wounds and blood passed out right after he asked “what happened?”. Sam wasn’t used to seeing people covered in blood although he saw the death of his loved ones. Sam dialled 911 and took the stranger to the hospital.

Entry: Cindy

LGBTQ

There was no information about the stranger. It was like talking about a newborn with no name. While the stranger was getting surgery, Sam started thinking about Cindy. Although he fulfilled his thirst for answers, he was still not happy because he couldn’t find the inventor of the app.

His search for the inventor, the mass murderer that killed the number of people in a city just with an app is still on. The red light turned off and the doctor came out of the operation theater; there was no expression on the doctor’s face which led to confusion but they confirmed that the surgery was a success and that Sam can meet the patient in an hour.

She was finally awake and Sam got the chance to meet the person officially. Her name was Andy and that she was a software engineer. Andy was a little shy at the beginning but then after she talked to Sam for a while, she told him about how she got into that situation – ” Since I was a kid, I was told and taught that there were only 2 genders and those were girls and boys. Once I knew that I was gay, no one accepted me.

No one respected my feelings when I wanted to be called “she” and not “he”. People started showing hate and yesterday when I went to a church, people there accused and insulted me, called me names, and started chasing me. I ran 24 km to find until I found a neighborhood” There were the words Andy told Sam.

Andy wasn’t desperate for attention, she just wanted to be accepted into the cold faced society and live her life the way she wanted to. She just wanted to fit in with other people and live the life she used to. Sam tried to console Andy although he didn’t know-how. Just because someone told you everything’s going to be fine or things change with time, issues just don’t change like day and night.

Sam knew that he needed to help Andy, not just Andy but everyone like Andy by changing the mindsets of frozen brains found in society. First Sam wanted to be educated properly and change his mentality on viewing issues because what Andy went through is so painful both physically and mentally.

Being born to stand out isn’t a problem but people view it like it’s a bad thing. Societies like ” If you want to be a part of us, you need to be like us” literally people want others to be just like them, they want others to be stars like the rest when some people are like the moon.

Being different and getting accepted in society is 10 times harder than getting approval to move out of an Indian household to live together. Think about it, getting approved to live together is one of the hardest achievements ever for Indians (pun intended). Sam and Andy became good friends and after Andy got discharged, Sam offered Andy his place to stay at, considering Andy’s’ safety.

Sam learned a lot about the world and understood the fact that he’s been living under a rock not knowing about any current issues in society. Many people in the world are afraid to represent themselves the way they want to because they’re being threatened to be alike and the ones that are different receive special treatment like being insulted and laughed at a lot. They are afraid of people killing their dignity.

Being lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender is common and there is nothing wrong with it. People need to love themselves and need to accept someone the way they are. Men liking men or women liking women is not something to feel ashamed about and that does not give one the right to humiliate them. People talk about equality when they are homophobic. How is equality going to be given to everyone when the one fighting for the issue is against it subconsciously or consciously?

Since we were kids, many parents taught their kids about how to be like a boy or a girl and not give their children an option to choose who they want to be. Andy was fortunate to be accepted by her family but many others aren’t. Parents told kids that barbies are for girls and cars are for boys, that blue is only for boys and pink is for girls. Even liking other colors that are considered to be used by other gender is a very bad thing and a great shame for some people. That needs to be changed.

The Fights for Equality

Flag

We fight for equality when you don’t want to be a part of it until the end. Andy was sick of hearing about colors, things she should use. She was sick of hearing words from others behind his back like a never-ending alarm and rumors that are meaningless and stupid.

Sometimes she felt like she was drowning in an ocean and there’s no way to get out of it because of the stress and anxiety she developed. She began to see changes mentally and physically because of her hardship. So, she quit her job and decided to bring justice to many people like her. She accepted, learned about herself, and valued her pride. That’s when she got an idea to make a flag.

A flag that includes all the colors like a rainbow to represent that all are equal and no one is restricted to be themselves. A flag to tell people that she is there for them. She designed it herself and with the help of Sam, she was able to run protests and rallies. She and Sam filed a case and that went to the supreme court. Andy explained what happened to her and stood up for many others who were afraid to come out.

She mainly fought for same-sex marriage. Many started to stand up for themselves and stopped enduring the pain they’ve been facing. Andy explained that there is nothing wrong with being different and being gay, lesbian, etc is totally normal in the world. She wanted to be called she/her and not he/him and that was something that not just Andy but many people wanted. Having their recognition and no compromising!

On the other hand, while helping Andy, Sam was trying to find all the clues he could about the inventor of the app. The one app that wiped out more than 500 people lives in Russia, Pakistan, and now India. But the app inventor left no trace of his work looking as if he never did anything. Sam also didn’t notice but it’s almost been a year since Cindy died. And no matter how hard he investigated, he ended up coming back to square one.

After a few days from Cindy’s memorial, the case Andy and Sam filed had been approved and won legal rights for all people that were gay and lesbian. On June 26, 2015, the U.S. Supreme Court struck down all state bans on same-sex marriage, legalized it in all fifty states, and required states to honor out-of-state same-sex marriage licenses.

The “App”

The App

That was what Andy fought for while developing awareness in the society he lived in. Slowly people started accepting others just the way they are and everything seemed to meet the expectation Andy had in mind.

Since Mr.Rick and Sam are neighbors, Andy came across Mr.Rick’s house and met him. she didn’t know who Mr.Rick was and his relationship with Cindy. Sam came along with Andy and when Mr.Rick met Andy, he talked with her so informally as if he met her already. Andy vastly denied meeting Mr.Rick before and it seemed like Mr.Rick was confused with his amnesia. Sam believed Andy since he trusted her. But other things started happening around Andy that don’t make sense.

Truth Revealed

Truth

That’s when Sam started thinking, how he was always misled by his clues leading to square one. How a person’s next steps are so invisible and untraceable. Only people who are close to you can do things near your blind eyes because you trust them too much. Sam started to recall everything from the beginning and remember seeing Andy in one of the photos with Cindy. He didn’t confess the information with Andy yet but he had a few hunches.

Sam tried to go through Andy’s luggage although he knew it was manner-less. He felt so guilty and felt like he climbed the wrong tree but he didn’t have a choice and that’s when he saw pictures of many victims that died using the app. He also found Cindy’s and couldn’t control his emotions. He started crying and almost filled a bucket of tears.

Andy saw Sam and thought about his old self. The person that was so scared to even go to a convenience store because of being scared to get bullied. Andy decided to come clear and entered the room although it felt like entering a war-zone to negotiate. The only question from Sam was ” Why did you do something like this, why did you create a killing machine? why!”.

Andy cried but she explained that she wasn’t the person who invented the app. When Andy found out that he was gay, he wanted to be called “she” and people mocked her for that. Andy was called with many names and bullied. She endured it until she couldn’t anymore but she said she would never do something like that.

Although I am angry at the people who hurt me, I wouldn’t want someone else to go through what I faced. Andy also said “I know you have every reason to suspect me because of my profession and all these pictures, but it wasn’t me. I was trying to find the person that invented the app because it killed my sister, Cindy”. Sam understood everything after those words. But what he couldn’t is how all the clues just sync towards Andy.

Thinking about it, “who has the reason to do something like this being around me a lot? Who?” and that’s when it crossed his mind. Mr.Rick! He was the one that caused the first doubt about Andy and he was the one that gave testimony about Cindy’s death. Sam did a little bit of digging into Mr.Rick’s past and got to know what he used to do and about the death of his husband.

Sam found a way to make the backstabber, the mass murder to fall into a trap. Surprisingly, he fell into the trap and confessed. Mr.Rick’s husband’s death was caused by people humiliating him for marrying a person of the same gender. His husband was just like Andy but he wasn’t strong enough, people drained the energy and life out of him with just words.

” I was angry, I was devastated, he was one of the kindest beings ever, he didn’t deserve this. He truly didn’t! After his death, I wanted to show people how he felt. So, I created this app. To make people feel the pain my love did”- he explained why he did it, people using the app do tasks given by anonymous people and level up.

He wanted to show others how his spouse felt and how his mental health was affected so badly that he got suicidal thoughts. These were his last words before he confessed to the cops and got ready to face his punishment. Many others just like Sam lost a family member or more because of an app. There is only so much technology can do.

Sam didn’t know whom to blame after what he heard. Sam thought about what Mr. Rick’s husband went through, how much a person got hurt by society, so much that his death made someone create an app to make people feel his pain. The bottom line is to respect everyone despite how they are because you do not know what someone is going through. And someday, just like Mr.Rick, there are going to be more people and more ways to show pain if we behave the same way we are behaving now.
