What is Procrastination? 

To begin, in the rare case that you are unfamiliar with the term, procrastination is a word originated from the Latin verb procrastinate. It means to put off or postpone an errand or responsibility. 

So where is the Science?

You see, when we procrastinate, there is an internal fight that takes place. Studies have shown that there is an actual argument between two parts of the brain: the limbic system and the prefrontal cortex. 

While the prefrontal cortex wants to work, the limbic system would like to stay on the couch and watch television. In this argument, however, the limbic system always seems to win, and this is because of a part of the brain called the amygdala. The amygdala is a rather small mass of gray matter, but its purpose is quite the contrary, as it controls a big part of the brain; an average individuals’ flight or flight response, fears, and anxieties. 

When procrastinating, our anxiety is activated, and our mind is taken control of that of a monkey. We might deflect the task because of its displeasure, because we don’t know where to start, or because we fear to fail. Therefore, we let a monkey take our attention elsewhere. Tim Urban’s TED Talk 

Second, according to a Ted Talk in 2016 by Tim Urban, the difference between a procrastinator versus a non-procrastinator is the lack of something known as the instant-gratification monkey, as mentioned before. 

This monkey only does things to please itself constantly, which is why it is accompanied by the rational decision-maker in our brains. Additionally, Urban explained that there is another figure named the “Panic Monster”, which is awakened when fearing deadlines, embarrassment, etc., and that this monster is the only thing the instant gratification monkey is afraid of. 

In essence, when we realize how much time we truly have to complete something, our panic monster panics, our gratification monkey runs, and our rational decision-maker can gain control, allowing us to finally be productive. 

Furthermore, Urban went over the two types of procrastination: the non-deadline and deadline-oriented procrastinating. He elucidated that if our panic monsters only come out when we have a deadline, then other crucial things in our lives that don’t need deadlines – that are decisions made by us – are constantly postponed. Therefore, it’s not that some of us cannot achieve our goals, it’s that we aren’t even trying to. 

How can we Eliminate Procrastination then? 

In conclusion, procrastination is such a consuming activity that we all take a part of. The question is, how can we be more efficient? How can we spend less time procrastinating and more time getting work done? Since humans are so bad at regulating themselves, it is ideal to have a plan when attacking something. 

If it is an assignment with a deadline, the best ideas would be to use time management, and break it down and do it in parts. However, if it is long-term procrastination, something being procrastinated in your personal life, you should take a look at your goals and dreams, reevaluate, and stay cautious of that instant gratification monkey. It is best to start reaching for goals instead of believing you have time because you will regret it when you don’t.
