Rape: When Will it Truly Die Out?

Rape: When Will it Truly Die Out?

Janani Anand

Can you imagine being in a situation where your mother, sister, or friend who happens to be a girl (or any woman in general) is kidnapped, tortured, sexually assaulted, raped, and massively injured in places that your biology books probably won’t even teach you about? And at the end being murdered, after going through so much!

Now, you might think, of course, there is a law under which all these culprits will be put behind bars and be hanged to death! Well, if you think like that, then let me give you a few instances and then the decision is up to you

1. Mathura Rape Case

Mathura

The Mathura rape case was an incident of custodial rape in India which took place on the 26th of March, 1972, putting emphasis on the word ‘custodial rape’. Mathura was only about 14-16 years old at that time, meaning that she was a minor. A person, who falls below the age category of 18. In the above cases, where would you go for justice?

2. Odisha Rape Case

Odisha Rape Case

On July 2nd, 2020, (reports came out on this particular date) a 13 –year-old girl (A minor) was raped repeatedly by Cops at Odisha (India)’s Birmitrapur police station. . Anjana Mishra, the estranged wife of an Indian Forest Service officer, was raped on 9 January 1999. The case had created a furore in the State with Anjana accusing the then Chief Minister J. B. Patnaik and his friend former Advocate-General of Odisha Indrajit Ray of having played a role in the incident.

#3 Nirbhaya Rape Case

Nirbhaya Rape Case

I am sure, most of you might know who and what the Nirbhaya case is all about. Jyothi Singh, a physiotherapy intern, while returning home at night with one of her friends, was beaten up, gang-raped, and tortured in a private bus. What should have happened by law? Shouldn’t the convicts be hanged and put to death immediately?

The Reality

But in reality, what happened? It took 7 years! Yes, seven long years for her to get justice. Out of which, one convict was left out as has he was a minor at the time when the crime was committed. What is the assurance that he won’t commit the same crime again?

These examples that I just quoted above are just one in a thousand cases, every day. If we try tracing each and every case, we’ll understand the sad reality that out of all the cases, hardly one or two will get the right verdict. While the rest just stays as paperweight throughout the years.

I can guarantee that about 50% of rape cases that get registered are either ignored or taken lightly or probably never taken into consideration. And yet, girls are blamed in our society for wearing short clothes, for exposing themselves in public, for talking to boys, for getting back home late.

The Rightful Teaching

But please, if you knew how to bring up your sons in the proper manner, if you knew how to teach your sons to respect each and every woman as a mother or sister, then I think the world would have been a safer place for girls.

Again, I’d like to clarify that I’m not here to generalize all men. I am sure we all have fathers and brothers and friends who are boys.

All I would like to say is that most of us only speak up when there is a problem which involves us or which involves someone who is related to us. Or, when there is yet another rape case, all we do is hashtag it and share it around to people. Trust me, all these will not bring justice to the person who is victimized. We, as a society, must first change the way we think. The problem for most of us is our own thoughts. So, I think it’s the time we all educate ourselves.

I, as a single person, cannot change the way the society thinks or the way it is, but I as a person can definitely spread awareness on how our society must be. But, if I were to have a personal say on this matter, I’d like to register it this way,” I hope all these rapists are beaten up to death and all this must be telecasted live on our televisions”.

And I hope someday, that this world shall be a safer place for girls to live, I hope someday, that men shouldn’t even think of looking at their mothers and sisters in the wrong way. Someday…
