A lot of time it feels like we aren’t doing enough, especially now in these unprecedented times. Here’s an article reassuring you that it’s okay to be lazy and carefree every now and then.

Watching people on Instagram post about their 8-hour work schedule with their aesthetic workspace and absolute “no-breaks-only-grinding” lifestyle, we tend to compare ourselves and wonder why we’re not on par. It’s okay to stop for a second and go at your own pace and yes, your binge eating at 3 am to finish your college essay is justified. A simple glance at the home page of any social media platform will present to you people sharing their 14-hour workday, learning new skills, building upon old habits and being productivity gurus.

Somehow, staying at home gave people the time they needed to not just get their life together but also enrich their lives and become better people. And why shouldn’t it? Now with all this time, there’s never been a better opportunity to learn something new and sign up for that course you had your heart set on. It seems like everything about this opportunity is perfect yet it isn’t.

Motivation levels hit all-time lows. Online classes just don’t push you forward as real classes do and you find yourself in bed wondering if you really even have to get up. It’s easy to fall into a rut. In fact, it’s justified to fall into a rut. No one is used to working like this and the lockdown is not something that anyone anticipated. It’s okay not to be prepared and above all, it’s okay not to be productive right now.

You cannot compare yourself to what you see on the internet. What you see is only what you are allowed to see and we have no idea what goes on in the minds of a productivity guru. In fact, they might just be hypocrites dishing out baseless advice that they cannot follow. Or they might be following through, you never really know.

But as human beings, each one of us is different. We all go at our own pace and to compare yourself to another person in another scenario hardly makes any sense.

You only see a glimpse of who a person really is.

School just doesn’t feel the same. Online classes are radically different from actual school. But is different always a bad thing? We’re so caught up in thinking about how we can’t meet our friends and how classes don’t feel the same that we fail to realize all the other things that have changed. Online classes provide a level of flexibility that school does not. The convenience of online classes is something that we can’t overlook either.

So yes, school feels different but different isn’t always bad. If you ever feel too overwhelmed, just remind yourself to take a deep breath and stop to think for a while. Maybe it’s not the same as meeting your professor but arrange for a zoom meeting to talk to him about how you feel about class.

Get your questions cleared out, with classes going digital there is so much that we have to explore. Websites like Khan Academy and OpenStax open up a variety of opportunities. Youtube channels tailored to your course and a smorgasbord of videos going at different paces ensure that you will find the exact one you need. Online classes allow you to go at a speed you are comfortable with. You’ll find your own pace and once you’ve got that, there’s no going back.

This article is not here to tell you how you should spend the hours of your day. Instead, this article was written to remind you that you have full control over your day. You have full control over how you choose to spend your hours and what you do with your time. There are no mistakes, only opportunities to learn. The pandemic has taken its toll on all of us.

Take a breather. Remind yourself that everything will be okay. And then get back to whatever you were doing and crush it. You’ve got this. You’ve got the potential to achieve anything you put your mind to.
