3 Reasons Why The Captivating Fashion Industry is Going Green.

Discussing the harms that the major fashion industry is creating. Starting from toxic wastewater that negatively impacts marine life to the high production rates and the amount of landfill it creates. I list multiple small, organic brands to dig deep to research on sustainability in the fashion industry.

Sustainability, the avoidance in the use of natural resources in order to maintain a healthy, ecological environment. Based on the instrumental data, the enormous production of fashion makes up 10% of the world’s pollution, making them the second most polluting industry in the world.

How does a well-known, substantial fashion industry cause so much harm?

First, when textile factories discard untreated toxic wastewater, containing lead, mercury, arsenic, and other harmful substances, directly into rivers where garments are produced.

Additionally, the usage of fertilizers in cotton production immensely contaminates the water. As a result, this impacts millions of marine life and even humans near the rivers negatively.

Not only do they contaminate the major water sources, but the fashion industry is also a great water consumer. The pigmentations in your garments are produced from dyeing. This consumes a huge quantity of freshwater. Hence causing a shortage of clean water.

Everyone has clothes that are made of cotton. The softness and the breathability attracted billions of people for over 7,000 years now. Being the most commonly used material, it has resulted in significant harm in the environment. Growing on a warm, dry land, they require tremendous amounts of water. To draw a picture, they need 20,000 litres of water just to produce 1kg of cotton. Despite being environmentally unfriendly, they are still the world’s most dearly loved material.

Remember when not using plastic straws was a trend? Well, about 1,900 pieces of microfibers are released into the water when we wash synthetic clothes. These are eaten by marine animals, making it back to us when we eat fish, shrimp, etc.

In addition, we are more prone to throwing away old clothes. Textile waste has increased by 811% in the US since the 1960s. Studies show that only about 15% of the clothes are donated or recycled. The 85% of the clothes end up in landfill, clogging up the earth, harming EVERYBODY.

Furthermore, deforestation of rainforests is also an issue. Rainforests that are important to our ecosystem are being cut down to be replaced by plantations of trees to make wood-based fabrics like rayon, modal, and viscose. The millions of trees being cut down endanger animals and ancient forests that help our ecosystem alive.

The list goes on. There are millions of other reasons why you shouldn’t buy from or support fast fashion. Next time you see a piece of clothing that you want to buy, remember the damage you are making. To make it easier to consume environmentally friendly garments, here are some small, slow fashion brands that we all should be making an effort to support.

Green Fashion

To start off, Chhavi Mongia shared her opinions on sustainability. The question of “Do you believe that the fashion industry is slowly moving toward being environmentally friendly?” was asked.

To which, she replied with, “Yes, I do believe a part of the fashion industry is moving toward being environmentally friendly.” She adds, “Even if it’s not with the fabrics they are using, a lot more clothing brands are now conscious of their packaging and are at least using biodegradable plastic.”

Chhavi Mongia believes that all these baby steps should be happening in all of the brands and major fashion companies.

It’s going to take a mass global movement for a complete shift to take a mass global movement for a complete shift to take place as we as humans are so habitual in our ways.

With the next question, we studied why it is important to shop sustainable fashion and not fast fashion.

With the “global pandemic, untimely rain, floods, forest fires, shortage of water, frequent earthquakes,” etc, “all of us inhabitants of the earth have to move towards sustainable living.” She also states that to be sustainable and keep the Earth healthy, “we have to become one with nature for it to cradle us.”

This small business, with currently 307 followers, uses yarns made from plants grown in various soils, turning them into high quality sustainable and eco-friendly fabric. By not adding any man-made chemical-based substance to their products, they achieved an organic brand.

TRE is also another eco-friendly brand that establishes a “pure & elegant identity.” Using natural fabric, they sell dresses, jumpsuits, bags, you name it! They produce a very minimalistic look that a lot of people strive for nowadays.

Last but not least, Lotus Swim is a female-owned, sustainable swimsuit company. Their swimsuits are made from ocean fishing nets, including all shapes and sizes! Showing off a natural, healthy body, they achieve an organic and trendy look on their brand.

Next time you decide that you need new garments, make sure to shop sustainably! They cause zero harm, and will keep this Earth forever yours!
