Interview with Sanskruti Balgude

What or who inspired you to become an actor and have you always wanted to be an actor?

Well, I never wanted to be an actress… more of a choreographer I’d like to say cause I was so passionate about Dance and Choreographing. Although back then in school and in college as well, while watching a few of those soaps on Disney I did try and imitate some of their scenes in front of the mirror, not gonna lie.

But that being said, when I auditioned for my big break, my debut soap on Zee Marathi, I knew acting wasn’t my cup of tea, but once I got into it, I remember how it drove me to a point where I knew I wanted to be an actress all my life… It was that adrenaline rush I didn’t know I needed.. that’s how during my initial years I learned about “Meryl Streep” and believe me, she is the sole reason why I am an actress today, and I do what I do… I worship her

How do you prepare for a role?

I am yet to play a role my dreams yet.. just sharing! But I have always learned from my veterans that “Acting can’t be taught” and it’s true! So true! We all are diverse individuals and that alone is proof that all of us have different emotions and reactions to different things.

I believe the power of empathy is the magic to prepare for any character you need and some good observation. That’s how I work personally. Acting although is pretense, it’s also emotions.. If you can’t feel, you can’t emote.. So many factors add up to it though.. You gotta dig in deeper to know what kind of a person your character is..

How often do you run lines or practice your skit?

A LOT! Of course I do see to it that I don’t over rehearse my scene cause then I always fear it would get monotonous but I make sure I run all my dialogues till am fluent and confident with them.

Which character did you like to play the most?

I just recently played a character called “Kimaya” in a web series called “Kaale Dhande” on Zee5 and I loved portraying her cause we were dead opposites in personality and that really sparked my interest. I had to take extra efforts to build her the way she was sketched and the series writers did an excellent job but I felt I had to live up to the “Kimaya” they had visualized and I think I did!

You sure did! Has a character you played ever altered your personality?

That would be a BIG YES! It was the very first character of my life, or I ever played.. My debut character, “ Aanandi”. This character had the most impact on me for the longest time and it still does to an extent. She was really  naive, kind, gem of a human, always believing in the good, empathetic, sensitive and that changed so much of my perspective and shaped me into the human or an artist I am today.. Call it what you will, but I already was an emotional person but “Aanandi” took it to the next level.

What makes a good co-star?

To me a good co-actor is all about being supportive and cordial.. There are a combination of experiences I have had.. I have worked with really good ones and not so good ones too.. I always believe that actors should work towards enhancing any given scene or their respective performances which, goes unsaid uplifts the performance of the actor in the front too, leading the work to be great.

What was your very first performance like?

Dreadful! Not even kidding! I wanted to run from the set after giving my first shot. The director, the production were kind enough to make me feel comfortable as I was a rookie in the business but still it was no easy. It still ain’t easy sometimes but the butterflies in the stomach reduce with time but don’t completely disappear!

What’s your dream role?

There ain’t a specific role I want to play.. there never was.. but I do know that I specifically want to do a biopic someday.. that’s my dream!! To be able to do a living character is gonna be so challenging and that excites me just by thinking of it.. the procedure, the journey will be so enlightening am sure.. So, yeah, a biopic of an inspiring woman, someday!

You have acted in the most successful Marathi OTT release on Zee5, Kaale Dhande. Is it tougher to act in comedy films and hold your laughter?

To be quite honest, Kaale Dhande is a light hearted series with a touch of a Lovestory to it but my character in the series, “Kimaya” wasn’t comical even the slightest. Rather like I mentioned earlier, I had all scenes which needed emotional intensity, so it was quite tough. It’s a sitcom, so comedy happens, unintentionally. I hardly laughed in the series actually, so there wasn’t much of any circumstances where I had to control my laughter.. the crew on set though? Sure had to..

How was the overwhelming feeling of working with Mahesh Manjrekar?

Mahesh sir is one of the celebrated and respected directors of the fraternity and like everyone even I wanted to work with him someday. Fortunately I worked WITH him and under his direction as well.. He is extremely sincere when it comes to work yet he is really chilled out in a way.. The best part was, when we worked, our approach towards my character were pretty compatible and that was a relief to me!

You received a Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2019 as Best Actress for Sarva Line Vyasta Aahet. What was the first thoughts in your mind when you learned that you received the award?

I learned about the award just 2 weeks ago I believe. I was shooting for one of the songs and it was pretty late. It was such a pleasing surprise, I mean why not! Firstly, I kept confirming it and when I actually saw my name in the list, I was convinced. Lol. I had fun during that film and it was my very first comedy starrer.. Initially, it was nerve cracking cause comedy ain’t an easy job but it’s proof,  with a good team, it’s always possible..

What are some of your upcoming projects? What can you tell us about them?

I have a film due for release which again has an amazing ensemble cast and a song I did lately. Pretty excited!

What are your most memorable moments of playing?

  1. Isha in Lagna Mubarak
Oh I had so much fun performing Isha. She was a tomboy and that meant no limits to what I could perform..! I remember working on the character every single scene cause it was unlike me and something I had never even got close to working or being. I would like to play a character similar to her, again.
  2. Kimaya in Kaale Dhande
Kimaya was loved by so many and she is to date. It’s been a year since Kaale Dhande has been released and there are still so many out there who are repeatedly binge-watching the series. Kimaya I played with all my heart. This connects I found with her that I can’t probably pen down. Probably she was every other girl, striving to keep her love intact and breaks when everything falls apart. Every guy found their own girlfriend in her or wanted one like her. I love Kimaya. I will always will.
  3. Mohini in Sangto Aika
My debut in the film industry! So so special! It was great to be part of the film and to have a song on ur name which turned out to be a huge hit later. The experience was enriching. It’s a film quite close to my heart.
  4. Tanvi in Sarva Line Vyasta Aahet
A curious, nosy photographer! Is what I always thought of her. Being a photographer, handling the camera was thrilling, to top it off, the humor created in the film. The cast was huge and lively. Our director “Pradeep Mestry” helped me out with Tanvi. I received an award for her, what else could I ask!
