Wellness is an extremely sensitive topic when looking at many people, ranging from if the person has trauma, or if the person is simply mentally unstable. During this pandemic specifically, many people seem to have lost their identity.

Anecdote: Rose for Emily

I want to make a comparison between this current pandemic and a short story title “Rose for Emily.” In the short story, a young girl named Emily was raised by her father who restricted her from doing many things, one of the main things include the fact that he did not let her have any outside connections.

He was her only source of outside influence. Later on, he passes away and Emily is left confused. She doesn’t know who she is anymore, she has lost her identity. After spending so much time with her father and her identity completely orbiting him, she had forgotten who she actually was, even though it never seemed like she had her own personality, where was she going to get it from?

Lost Identities during the Pandemic

This is a parallel to what is going on now. Everybody is currently isolated from all their loved ones, creating many people to fall into depression, or an unhealthy state of mind is created. Many people nowadays try too hard to fit in because they aren’t comfortable being their own selves, they feel like they’d stand out too much and not fall under society’s standards.

So, they usually tend to grasp onto someone else’s actions or character and hold onto it and shapeshift into someone else’s mind. Now, being separated from everybody, people fall into a state of confusion, unaware of who they really are. However, personally I feel like people should always make the best out of the worst situations.

Take this time to create another identity, be your own self. Now, this is what multiple influencers continue to preach about. Recently, after being isolated we’re on our phones for a longer period of time, we have nothing better to do. People are on social media and continuously compare themselves to other people telling themselves that they will never be good enough, pretty enough, smart enough, and so on. And this hurts their mental health, this isn’t okay.

On the other hand, I feel like we should take this time to educate ourselves about self- love and be your own person. That way once this is all over and we are allowed to return back to our old lives we can have a more diverse community, instead of constantly seeing the same fashion trends, the same makeup trends, etc. Not only will this help with your own wellness but arising identities could always change society’s standards and inspire others to step out of their comfort zone and try something different before it’s too late and they lose and forget who they are after relying on someone else for so long.
