Everyone is aware of Serena Williams and adores her accomplishments in Tennis, yet, today, on her 39th birthday, The Teen Pop Editors Meghana Boda, Sarim Hamid, and Riddhi Bhattacharya collaborate on this article that acknowledges her family and life outside the Tennis world!

Serena Williams and Her Parents

Born to Oracene Price and Richard Williams in Saginaw, Michigan. When she was young, her family moved to Compton, California, where Serena started playing tennis at the age of four. Her father, Richard Williams had written a 78-page plan and began giving Serena Venus tennis lessons but later on mentions that he should have rather coached them when they were six!

Serena and Richard Williams

In 1995, Richard Williams pulled Venus and Serena out of the tennis academy they attended and coached the sisters himself. Thankfully, Serena won the US Open four years later and Venus won the Wimbledon title in 2000. However, later on in the sisters’ career, he had a less visible role and went on to take interest in photography.

Serena and Oracene Price

Oracene Price, mother of Serena Williams, is also a Tennis Coach and is regarded to as one of the best tennis players of all time. Richard Williams was not just the only one who had a part in coaching Serena and Venus, Oracene had just as much of a role as he did. However, by the end of 2000, Oracene Price was no longer living with Richard Williams and had gotten a divorce by 2002. She describes her self as being a ‘rampant feminist’ when talking about with what she believes to be the excessive sexualizing images of women in the media.

Oracene Price’s coaching has been overshadowed by her role as a mother and is underappreciated as a coach. Today both Oracene Price and Richard Williams are equally credited, in coaching Venus and Serena and building a solid foundation of self-esteem and interests for the sisters.

Venus and Serena Williams are both professional Tennis players and are collectively called the Williams Sisters. They became the first two players, female or male, to play in four consecutive Grand Slam singles finals from the 2002 French Open to the 2003 Australian Open. By winning the 2001 Australian Open women’s doubles title, they became the fifth pair to complete the Career Doubles Grand Slam and the only pair to complete the Career Doubles Golden Slam. At the time, Venus and Serena were only 20 and 19 years old, respectively.

In August of 2020, the Williams sisters went head-to-head for a 31st time at the WTA stop in Lexington, Kentucky, a match that Serena won 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. It was a first even for the Williams sisters: Playing in front of no fans due to the COVID-19 pandemic. “It’s never easy,” Serena told reporters about facing her sister after the win.

“The best part is (that) we bring out the best in each other,” Serena told reporters. “I know when I play her, I have to play some of my best tennis. She does, too. … I feel like throughout our career, we have pushed each other to be the best that we can be… and be Venus and Serena Williams.”

Serena and Venus’ half-sister Yetunde Price who was a personal assistant to her tennis playing sisters and a nurse. Unfortunately, on the night of 14 September 2003, Price was chatting with her boyfriend in her SUV, parked outside what subsequently was revealed to be a trap house in the suburbs of Compton, Los Angeles County, California. According to the prosecution at the subsequent trial, two members of the Southside Compton Crips street gang, who were guarding the house, opened fire on the SUV in the belief that they were “defending the crack house from gangland rivals,” presumably the Lime Hood Bompton Pirus. Price was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital, from a bullet wound in the head.

In 2016, the Williams sisters opened a community center in Compton for “victims of violence and their families”, called the Yetunde Price Resource Center. Its tagline reads: “Committed to helping others heal.” In an interview with TIME, Serena Williams said she learned of his release on 31 July, through Instagram, ten minutes before her match against Johanna Konta at the 2018 Silicon Valley Classic, a match she went on to lose 6-1, 6-0 to Konta in 52 minutes.

Serena’s Everlasting Support System

When it comes to the core of Serena Williams, it all comes down to her family. Her family is her strongest support system. In the 2020 US Open, her husband, Alexis, brought her three-year-old daughter to the stadium in order to support Serena on Saturday, September 5. Later, her husband even posted a video on Instagram, showing Olympia happily clapping for her mother amidst COVID-19 in the center, proudly mouthing the words “mama” to her father during a proud moment.

Serena and Alex Ohanian’s Love Story

According to Vanity Fair, Serena and Alexis met in May 2015 at the Rome Cavalieri hotel. Alexis seated himself at the table next to Serena’s. Serena and her group of friends, not wanting Alexis to sit at the table next to theirs while all of the other tables were empty, joked that there was a rat at that table, and when Alexis refused to move, Serena invited him over to their table.

Alexis is the co-founder of Reddit. At the time, Serena did not even know what Reddit was, and Alexis had never seen Serena play tennis. Despite knowing less about tennis, Alexis came to Serena’s game later that evening, and he knew so less about tennis that the first picture he posted of Williams’ shows her committing a foot fault.

They both had their first date in June 2015 in Paris. Serena invited Ohanian to watch her play, and they ended up walking around Paris for six hours before her tournament. Although Ohanian attended a lot of Serena’s tournaments, the couple remained private for a while. Even when in April of 2016, Ohanian knew he wanted to marry Serena, the couple still didn’t go public. Later on, Ohanian told Vanity Fair, “I felt like a door had been opened to a person who made me want to be my best self,” Then, in December 2016, Ohanian proposed in the perfect place that they met in – the Rome Cavalieri hotel.

The couple first went public when Ohanian announced the engagement on Reddit, and they ended up getting married after the birth of their daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr.

Serena’s Beloved Olympia

In January of 2017, right before Williams’ match in the Australian Open, Serena figured out she was unexpectedly pregnant. Ohanian figured out the great news before the tournament as well when he was there just to cheer her on. Serena ended up winning the tournament, being 8 weeks pregnant.

All of Serena’s strengths, courage, and happiness, comes from her daughter. Before Olympia was even born, Serena posted a touching note to Olympia on Instagram. Olympia was born on September 1, 2017, and was welcomed into this world with open arms.

However, after Olympia’s birth, Serena was facing near-fatal complications. Serena was already prone to blood clots by the time that Olympia was born, and she feared that she was experiencing a pulmonary embolism. The CT scan showed that she did indeed have blood clots in her lungs, and she had to spend a few days in the hospital recovering.

This didn’t let Serena down. Looking at her daughter made her want to fight through it, and today, Olympia has been to many of her mom’s matches. Since the birth of Olympia, there have been a lot of great successes throughout the family. Serena has won many tournaments, and Alexis has advocated for paternity leave. Ohanian says, “I took my full 16 weeks and I’m still ambitious and care about my career. Talk to your bosses and tell them I sent you,” Ohanian even started a podcast called “Business Dad” in which he interviews celebrities that are dads, and this was all inspired by the birth of Olympia.

Today, the family of three is living happily in a 6.7 million dollar mansion in Beverley Hills, California. With everything that Serena has gone through and the love and support system that she has created for herself, we hope she will be the best that she can in the future to come. Happy Birthday Serena Williams!
