Avatar

Ever wished to have a perfect Parisian vacation, or enrolling in a German university, or, conversing with your foreign counterpart? Then, the most overwhelming thought would’ve been the language and the struggles of being a polyglot.  Learning a new language is one of the most enriching and rewarding skills we can acquire over a lifetime, but it isn’t seriously a piece of cake, right?

Learning a language requires a lot of repetition, a lot of reference experiences, and a consistent commitment and investment. Are you ready to give it your 100%?

If YES, then let’s dive in deeper……………..

1. List Down Your Motives

Is it the Spanish test on Sunday, or you want to converse in French during your vacation? Know your motives and your reason to learn a language.  If you don’t have a good reason to learn a language, you are less likely to stay motivated over the long-run.

2. Start with The 100 Most Used Words and Phrases

Want to make it Quick learning a language, then start with the Most Commonly Used Words and Phrases? Just Google it up and VOILA! There you have multifarious results to choose from. Practice them, figure out the pronunciations, and look for alternatives. That’s how your small language dictionary starts expanding. You are literally on the way to mastering a language while carrying out basic conversations.

3. Grammar, Fluency and Accuracy

The greater part of the world’s troubles is due to questions and grammar.

Michel  de Montaigne

Grammar matters a lot and therefore, step 2 in your language learning journey should be grammar. Buy Grammar Textbooks, search Online, listen to Podcasts or hire a personal tutor, Mastering the Grammar means less likely chances of infuriating the natives, huh?

Fluency is the ability to express oneself easily and articulately. It means using the language smoothly in real-time.

Accuracy, on the other hand, is the ability to be correct and precise. It means communicating without any grammatical, vocabulary, tonal and other errors.

Once you are Fluent with a language, you will eventually be more Accurate. Start with the verbs in French, Pronouns in German, etc. and over the period of time, you will have grasped it all!

4. Talk To Yourself

polyglot

Immerse into self-talk on your most favourite topics in the desired foreign language.  Challenge yourself to think in the new language. Use the minimal vocabulary you have learnt, envision likely situations and tackle awkward conversations, with just a small dictionary of newly learnt words, coupled with improvised grammar, and hurray!!!!!!! You won’t have to be embarrassed the next time someone poses the same question to you. Great Improvement coming your way!!!

5. Read Foreign Adaptations of Stories

Now that you have started to get a hold of the basic conversations and grammar, go ahead and read your favourite book published in the aspired Language. Imagine reading Harry Potter in German, it might be a bit messed up in the starting, but Don’t Lose Heart, mon Ami(e), because the more you read, the more you know! Try until you know the whole book, and, alohomora, you will soon start to figure out that the story remains the same!

This step essentially prepares you to be able to read and conjure up the meaning of any text written in a foreign language. But, don’t forget the pronunciation. Instead of looking up the pronunciation of each and every word, Grab an Audiobook and learn to read and speak simultaneously. Also, one great way to figure out pronunciations is to use The Mimic Method. So, next time you are on a vacation, no need to ask what’s written up over there!

6. Watch Series with Foreign Subtitles

Well, how about watching F.R.I.E.N.D.S with French Subtitles? Interesting huh? Or Watching K-Dramas with English Subtitles. Wait till the moment you comprehend your favourite line from the show without sub-titles, and alakazam, you won’t need subtitles anymore.

7. Listen To Podcasts

With Language Goals so intense, one is likely to suffer attacks of misanthropy, and so switching to different mediums of learning a language is very important. Podcasts can come in handy when you want to make your breakfast time productive, or you are willing to listen to a Spanish Conversation on your drive home.

Whatever the case, Podcasts expose you to real-life language situations and can help you learn important skills like comprehending different accents, learning extensive vocabulary, taking proper pauses, etc. In fact, speaking of podcasts you can check out The Teen Pop’s Podcast too! (sad it ain’t in french!) It is available at Apple , Spotify Podcast, and Pocketcast

8. Talk to the Natives

Know a friend who is French, then maybe a call over the weekend, or, in- personal meets can do the job of providing you with the perfect language experience. If there’s a “secret” or “hack” to learning a new language, it’s hours and hours of awkward and strenuous conversations with people better than you in that language. An hour of conversation (with corrections and a dictionary for reference) is as good as five hours in a classroom and 10 hours with a language course by yourself.

Language is something that needs to be processed, not memorized. Having a face to face conversation with a native speaker can help you attain fluency and, eventually accuracy! Looking for a language buddy can also be helpful, now be it online or in-person.

Some Quick Tips to be a Polyglot:

When you learn a new word, use it right away!
When you come across a new word in a conversation, make a point to use it in the next two or three sentences you say. Language learning studies show that you need to hit a certain amount of repetitions of saying a word within one minute of learning it, one hour of learning it, one day, etc. so try using it right -away, few times in later part of the day.

TV Shows, Movies, Magazines and Supplements are a good Company!
Commit yourself to read an article every day and watching native movies during the weekends. Trust me, it helps. By the way, if you are a heartthrob fan of Sabrina, sorry to hear the sad news! Do check out our article on why it was Cancelled! Our heart still aches to see our favourite teenage witch!

Find a way to make it fun.
Be it turning flashcards to uncover the meaning, or translating songs, to writing articles, the learning process can only be effective when it made fun.so, be creative and channelize your energy in the right direction.

There will be a lot of confusion and ambiguity.
Prepare yourself to make mistakes and be embarrassed, but never lose heart. However good you are at the language, you’re not likely to have a complete grasp over the slight intuitive differences between each word, phrase or idiom that a native speaker does without living in the country for years.

Now that you have pledged to learn a new language, there’s no looking back . Give it your best. Use all the possible resources, learn to converse and achieve Fluency and Accuracy both. It’s crucial to revise and use your new language every single day. Gather the willingness to make mistakes and be ready to put yourself in potentially embarrassing situations. Stop being a Time-Keeper(I’ve learnt French for 5 years in school), instead of step out in the real crowd, out of your comfort zone and you will nail it!
