3 Ways Learning can be Easily Enhanced at Schools

Charitha Sarraju

Most of us miss school. We don’t miss the learning and the classes we attend but the people we attend it with. Schools aren’t teaching the future generation what they need to be educated on. We need to be taught with real-life examples to learn and use them when needed.

1. Engaging in activities

playing at school

I remember that when I was a kid, I was so excited to go to school because it was like going to wonderland every day and coming back in the afternoon. It was fun with all activities and I was taught how I could use those concepts in real-life situations. That’s what made me interested in studies. It was like a habit, trying to use them in life, it became a reason for me to remember them.

It’s not just about remembering those concepts and memories, I never had a reason to by heart them because I knew what I needed to learn. Whenever I needed to know the concepts, I could just remember them but now, a lot has changed.

2. From Learning to Succeed in Learning to Pass a Test

Once upon a time, we were taught to learn things to know about life and how to succeed in life but now, we are being taught to pass a test and not about how that is useful. In middle school, and when I started to learn algebra in sixth grade, none of my teachers explained to me or anyone in the whole class how that was useful in the future. They were like “ Learning algebra is important because it helps you understand calculus better” but what is the use of learning calculus if you don’t know how you can use it in real-life situations?

I questioned myself about what I learned and why I had to learn. I kept thinking if teachers actually wanted to teach the students or did they want to get praised for the grades we earned. Not just the school I studied in but many other schools in the world teach children so that they can pass some exams written by some professors. But those are nothing like the tests life gives us.

Many teachers just from the beginning of the first day of school are like “You guys need to pay attention to the class if you want to understand what I’m teaching to pass the E.O.C exam”. In my opinion, what does passing the End Of Course exam give me? Nothing but a certificate saying I passed the class with a particular grade.

What’s the use of using all your brainpower to study something that you are not learning to remember but learning to pass a mere test? I’d rather want to learn something that I’m going to use in my everyday life or something that can help me thrive amongst others.

If schools that are proud of their prestigious history for toppers teach their students to learn to succeed, many of the frontbenchers who sit in front of the class won’t end up being ordinary like the rest of the half of the population in the world. I don’t say everyone is the same or that I differentiate people by where they sit during class, but many people who succeeded in life were people that weren’t the best at school.

Some failed those boring school tests but passed the curve balls that life threw at them. They were ready for any challenge because they weren’t expecting something certain, they learned to understand every concept with their heart and to face any kind of challenge.

Only if the teachers who teach to make students pass a school test change their method of teaching students and their motive to teach, many students are going to be the next Bill Gates or become a role model for the next generations.

3. What we need to be educated on in School

Schools started wanting their students to be best at everything they teach but what they teach is not something that the students know if they are going to use it in the future. If the school management has a clear view of how a concept might help a student shine, the whole classroom is going to shine.

As I mentioned before, How is calculus going to help me? It’s not going to help me build my credit score in the future or help me pay taxes. Schools have been teaching but they excluded concepts that need to be taught. What we need to be educated is on how we can face life and how we can live by respecting everyone and not hurting them. Students need to be educated on equality and how they can make a difference in society.

Schools should teach students awareness about BLM, LGBTQ+, Feminism and matters that are needed to be more heard in this world. I strongly believe that the way a teacher teaches can affect the students a lot more than what their parents teach them because kids, teenagers spend most of their time at school. In fact, I suggest you even have a glance at one of our articles, 5 Things our Generation needs to hear which covers topics such as BLM, Feminism, LGBTQA+, Peace and War, etc.

The way teachers help their students can make a big difference within the students. This is my perspective on what we are learning and what we should be learning to overcome the future challenges life throws at us.
