3 Severe Issues that are Happening Internationally

Habibah Camara

The purpose of this article is to raise awareness of issues happening around the world that you may or may not be aware of. This is not to say the issues happening in our little world aren’t important, it’s just to show you the other side of the coin in countries that do not have the resources to help themselves. Keep in mind, this is all happening amid a pandemic

The Beirut Explosion

Beirut issues

Ever since mid-October in 2019, Lebanon has been in a massive economic crisis. “Even before the Covid-19 pandemic hit, the World Bank projected that 45% of people in Lebanon would be below the poverty line in 2020,” CNN writes. The economic crisis is currently accompanied by COVID-19, and that has led to a massive famine in this country. The situation is so bad that many people are afraid that the 1915-1918 famine will repeat itself again.

If you’re not aware, the 1915-1918 famine, also known as the Great Famine of Mount Lebanon, was a time of mass starvation during World War I that resulted in 200,000 deaths. Due to the hunger and economic crisis, there has been a spike in suicides, especially among teenagers. The crises also led to an unemployment rate of 30% among the country.

At least 137 people were killed and 5,000 wounded during the Beirut Explosion, which took place at 6:07 pm, local time, on Tuesday, August 4th. More than 300,000 people have been displaced from their homes, and, according to CNN, authorities “declared Beirut a “disaster city” and imposed a two-week state of emergency”.

An article written in USA Today, states, “It’s believed that the blast occurred when a fire ignited 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate stored at the port. The cause of the initial fire is unknown.” The explosion created a crater about 405 feet in diameter, a little bigger than the size of a football field.

There are many videos showing the explosion and the effects of it within seconds. Many in Beirut are struggling to go back to their homes and to find loved ones. The best way to help is to donate to the Lebanese Red Cross, which aids workers who are trying to find more people and give them the medical help they need.

South Africa: Two Pandemics

South Africa Women

Aside from COVID-19, the country is also dealing with femicide. Femicide is the killing of a woman or girl because of her gender. According to President Cyril Ramaphosa, “As many as 51% of all women within the nation have experienced some form of violence at the hands of their partners.” He also said that South Africa is “one of the most unsafe places in [the] world to be a woman.”

Between 2018 and 2019, about 180,000 crimes against women were reported in the nation. Statistics show that every three hours, a woman is killed in South Africa. In the most recent weeks, 21 women and children have been killed. Although there probably never will be a straight-up answer to why men are doing this, many believe that this is caused by the traditional gender roles, portraying women as submissive and inferior to men.

Muslims in Concentration Camps

Uighur Muslims

Currently, over 1 million Uyghur Muslims are put into concentration camps located in Xinjiang, China. There are about 85 known concentration camps in Xinjiang. The government has engaged in levels of torture and brainwashing to turn the Uyghur Muslims into “normal citizens” by making them disown their religion.

Men are taken into concentration camps while women are being forced to marry other Chinese men. Muslims are forbidden to eat pork and to drink alcohol, which is what they are forced to do inside these camps. Some documents were leaked and they showed that detainees were forced to take pills and get injections, they are the human subject of medical experiments, organ harvesting, and sterilization procedures.

They are also being forced to confess to “invented sins” and sing propaganda songs. Even outside the concentration camps, it’s hard to live well because of the horrible conditions they are being forced to live in. Outside of the camps, they are forced to have an app on their phone that monitors their activity. A key part of their religion, the hijab, is not permitted to be worn by women unless over the age of 45.

Inside their own homes, they are not allowed to speak in foreign languages and there MUST be pork and alcohol in their houses. 1 million Muslim homes have Chinese forces as “guests” to watch them. Many human rights lawyers described this as “a total transformation that is designed specifically to wipe the Muslim Uyghurs of Xinjiang as a separate cultural group off the face of the Earth.”

Well, now that you are aware of these issues, what are you going to do about it? The harsh truth is is that signing petitions here may not affect what’s happening internationally as much as we’d like it to. The best way to help is to donate to reliable sources and to raise awareness on it. It may not seem like a lot, but sometimes it’s just the little things that can help bring change. You can help us bring across the change!
