Underneath An Illegal Shadow

Underneath An Illegal Shadow

Aditri Singh

In her Contest X Stage I submission, Aditri talks about the darkness and brightness hidden behind the facade of shadows.

The Darkness

The Darkness in shadow

Our all-time search engine Google says, “ A shadow is a dark (real image) area where light from a light source is blocked by an opaque object.” But as a young adult, I see it in a bit contrasting way. A shadow is a part of us which we tend to ignore just like the hideous threats in our society. We see a shadow just as we see a crime being committed, but unfortunately, we are too busy to watch or neglect it.

Darkness camouflages harassment of a deity, abductions, human trafficking, illegal trades, domestic violence and many more felonious sins oblivious to the social equivalent to the shadow that disappears under the daring dark sky without care. We have all mistaken the proverb ‘Ignorance is bliss’ in being fallacious, instead, we use it as a safety cage to pry away from vicious situations taking place. Regardless of being a male or female, wealthy or poor; none are saved from the wrath of the evil – neither under the shining sun nor under the dark starry night. I reckon “Every sin is shadowed when darkness takes over.”

The Brightness

Brightness in shadows

Being a knight in the shining armour to those who suffer instead of cowering away is what makes us a beautiful personality similar to our umbra that does not leave us even in the hardest of times, however just hides away when the surroundings get dingy.

Individual mankind sees its own shadow in a different way, as one may see it as a path to optimism whereas the other might see it as a threat. An American novelist Gregory Maguire once said “The eye is always caught by light, but shadows have more to say.” Every shadow has its story to tell and so does ours. A silhouette will see endless joyous moments whereas it will also hear the loudest of the sorrowful screams and unstoppable tears. Our shadow defines our present, hides the past and waits for the future.
