In her Contest X Stage I submission, Danielle talks about the memories and lost shadows in the factory of illtreated Immigrants – USA.
A Poem: A Shadow Factory

when I was twelve, my mother handed me a book
inscribed with the words “My Family”
in it were the magnificent tales of my ancestors
who had come to America, the land of dreams
with seemingly nothing to their name but
a ragged pair of shoes and a shiny purse of hope
clutched onto their rounded backs
full of dreams and aspirations that they wished
would translate into reality
they didn’t know
that this would be forcefully stripped away within a matter of years
and that their hopes of cultural preservation would rush into the vast Mississippi rivers of America
only to be hindered by the mile-high barriers of assimilation
until they’re compelled to forget their culture entirely
and name their children American names
instead of ones from their mother countries
and forget the family recipes they swore to always remember
and lose memory of the language that they vowed to forever cherish
until nothing is left but a shadow
of the courageous person they used to be
of the pride and culture they used to hold so dearly
and so the day will come where their children will grow up
not knowing where they came from or who they are
and they will name their children American names
because they know no other way
and they will sob over the recipes that their mother failed to teach them
and they will forget that there was a language to begin with
that wasn’t American English
and there were people before them
that weren’t American
because they have been processed through the monotonous factory of the United States
where nothing remains but the shadows of those who lived before
who are now miserably roaming the country in agony
of the culture and memories they and their children had long forgotten

Darkness camouflages harassment of a deity, abductions, human trafficking, illegal trades, domestic violence and many more felonious sins oblivious to the social equivalent to the shadow that disappears under the daring dark sky without care. We have all mistaken the proverb ‘Ignorance is bliss’ in being fallacious, instead, we use it as a safety cage to pry away from vicious situations taking place. Regardless of being a male or female, wealthy or poor; none are saved from the wrath of the evil – neither under the shining sun nor under the dark starry night. I reckon “Every sin is shadowed when darkness takes over.”
