The husband of her majesty the Queen, unfortunately, passes away today on April 9th. Find more about Prince Philip and his legacy.

Who is Prince Philip?

Prince Philip and the Queen

Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, was born on Corfu island on June 10, 1921. At the age of 18, Prince Philip had joined the British Royal Navy, where he served through World War II in the Mediterranean and the Pacific. In 1947, he had changed his nationality as well as renouncing Greek and Danish thrones – his new name had now become Philip Mountbatten.

He got married to his distant cousin Princess Elizabeth (now the Queen), where he has appointed the title of ‘Royal Highness’ and was made a Knight of the Garter, Baron Greenwich, Earl of Merioneth, and Duke of Edinburgh.

Prince Philip’s Work

Aside from his royal duties, Prince Philip engaged in a lot of philanthropic work. He was a patron to about 800 organizations – from 1981 to 1996, he was the president of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) as well as creating an international program that allowed more than 6 million people to engage in community service, leadership development, and physical fitness activities. He also was:

  • President of the International Equestrian Federation from 1964 to 1986.
  • Chancellor of the universities of Cambridge, Edinburgh, Salford, and Wales.
  • an active member in the creation of nine BHF-funded centres of excellence.

Why Prince Philip never Became King?

After marrying Princess Elizabeth who rose to the throne after her father died, his title never changed to ‘King of England’, only to ‘Prince Consort’. This is simply because of a longstanding rule in the royal family which states that a man who marries a reigning Queen will only be regarded as a ‘Prince Consort’. The title of ‘King’ is only given to a monarch who inherits the throne and can reign. Hence, why Prince Charles will receive the title of ‘King’ as he the next successor to the throne.

How Did the Prince Pass Away?

The Prince had previously been admitted at St Bartholomew’s Hospital. for a pre-existing heart condition, for which he had surgery. Although not much is clear about the cause of his death, the Royal Family in a brief statement says that the Prince had died “peacefully” at Buckingham Palace.

The Teen Pop magazine conveys their condolences for the Royal Family and friends of Prince Philip and hope they are soon relieved of this untimely misery.
