The TVA is an organization that exists outside of time and space itself and is solely responsible for monitoring the timeline. Loki is given a choice; either being wiped from existence for being a ‘time variant‘ or help restore the timeline and stop a greater threat

Episode Review

The Episode kicks off from when Loki was captured in the Battle of New York in the first Avengers movies, then revisited in the time travel section of the Avenger’s Endgame movie. Anyone who has already watched these movies prior to watching Loki knows Loki steals the Tesseract during the commotion and disappears unto a portal, which ended up creating an alternate version of himself as well as an alternate timeline. This alternate version of Loki is one that has not yet unknowingly killed Frigga. Jumping out of the timeline allows Loki to avoid his death by Thanos that was set in stone in the main timeline.

After being captured by the TVA in the Mongolian desert, he is taken to court to be trialled for his crimes of creating another timeline. During the trial, Loki meets Agent Mobius who takes a keen interest in Loki. Agent Mobius takes Loki to a separate room and shows Loki his past crimes and cleverly asked for explanations to show Loki that he was not created to rule but to better others and help them realize their full potential. Loki escapes momentarily only to find multiple infinite stones lying around being used as paperweights by the TVA workers and in that moment he realizes how powerful the TVA truly is.

Loki goes back to the room where Agent Mobius initially took him and he goes through the records of his life and rewatches Frigga die and then ultimately sees his demise in the hands of Thanos. Loki was then made aware that all his crimes and actions were not done because he was the God of Mischief or because he enjoyed doing them, it was simply because he had to, it was all part of his illusion, “a cruel, elaborate trick conjured by the weak to inspire fear”. This causes Loki to reflect on his life and his decisions as well as his greater purpose.

The show later reveals that the greater threat that Loki has to face is another variant, another version of himself that has been on a rampage killing minutemen.
