Interview with Vanessa

How long have you been a makeup artist and how did you get your start in the industry?

I’ve been into makeup since I was 13 years old and now I’m 22 years old! My journey as a true artist started when I was 16 and got my start in the industry when I was 18, when I first connected with a beauty brand!

What is Beauty for you?

Beauty for me is everything! It’s makeup, it’s your skin, your eyes, your lips, your nose. It’s really everything. I think beauty is definitely subjective though. It’s different to everyone and I think that in itself is beautiful.

You have an incredible career – what have been your highlights?

Thank you! My career highlights… have definitely been working with some amazing brands, working with my managers, Chelsea and Artrell from Slash MGMT, getting to go to Vail, Colorado with Milk Makeup and meeting so many of my favorite creators and becoming friends with them! I’ve hit so many milestones in a year – it’s been crazy! However, my biggest accomplishment is creating my own water-activated liners and liner brushes with the Puerto-Rican brand, By Melolops

Where do you get your inspiration from?

I get inspiration from absolutely anything! My biggest inspirations come directly from the beauty community and in film/television. Shows like Euphoria and movies from the 90s like Clueless really get me inspired.

What has been the biggest challenge of your career?

The biggest challenge doing content creation is definitely managing my time. I work mostly in the sunlight because it elevates my content quality and it’s my signature! Without it, I personally feel like my videos or photos just aren’t the same. The sun and I go hand in hand. I cherish her haha.

What do you love most about makeup?

Endless possibilities. I can create absolutely anything out of nothing. I can transform my entire face or completely cover it in paint. It’s also just pure therapy for me when I suffer from moments of anxiety and depression. This is the one thing that gets me out of those places. I feel like everything is right in the world when I’ve completed a look that I came up with.

How would you describe your signature look and what is it about your style that sets you apart from other makeup artists?

My signature look has become my brows, bright/vibrant and colorful graphic liner look with glowy skin and a clear gloss. My style has become so distinct that people just know it’s my tutorial when they see my brows and my liner technique. It’s so cool when people tell me that!

What advice can you give to prospective students thinking about an education and career in makeup?

I, myself, am a student currently! My first dream was to attend a beauty school or an esthetician school. SO many of my content creator friends graduated from schools like that and are so much more educated on all things makeup and beauty. They’re so informative and helpful. However, while studying advertising and marketing, I really got a jump at the content creating portion of the beauty industry. What I do on social media is inherently what I’m studying. So, for any students who are interested in doing content creating, definitely look into beauty marketing. But if the curriculum is too boring, you have that other option!

Rapid Fire:

  • What famous artists have influenced you, and how?
Artists like @donni.davy from A24 + HBO’s Euphoria have inspired me immensely in my journey into editorial makeup. Pro makeup artists like @raoulalejandre, @isabelle.de.vries and @nikki_makeup and content creators like @esantoinette, @maytahmi, @raggedyroyal, @imightbesamera and @luciphyrr are artists that I look to when I’m in a slump and in need of a creative kick. Trust me! They are so inspiring!
  • What three makeup items should one not leave home without?
I can’t leave home without lip balm of some sort (lip care IS SO IMPORTANT), lash glue (incase my lashes start to fall off!) and extra eyeliner (in case I need to take off my lashes haha).
  • What are some of the most makeup styles to incorporate?
When in doubt, add some dots, some four-pointed star glitters, some rhinestone gems. I’ve learned that these little things can elevate a makeup look so much!
  • Can you recall that time when a client didn’t like the work you have done?
I can’t even recall the last time I’ve done makeup on someone other than myself! Haha. I think the last time I didn’t like the work I did was when I did this liner to match my hair color that day. It frustrated me so much but I ended up posting it anyway and A TON of people loved it regardless.
  • What are your plans for the future within the next 5 years?
My plans are to move into a new home with my family, hopefully join brands on more trips and work with them a little more closely, hitting a million “avengers” on my social media accounts and hopefully meet some of them! And just have a little more fun than I am right now.
