Best Ways to Increase Your Cycling Speed

Another part in a skill self-improvement series. Discover new ways and tips to try out to improve productivity, cycling skills and save time.

1. Bend and Tuck in Elbows

Cycling with the correct form

Air resistance is one of the reasons why your average speed is lower because the drag from the wind slows you down. Lowering yourself down to handlebars and tucking your elbows inwards makes you more aerodynamic, allowing you to move through the wind with less drag. [1]

2. Losing Weight

Proper Diet

Losing weight allows you to get higher speeds with the same amount of effort you put in. Not only that, but you will notice the difference when going uphill or up on slopes as there is less force of gravity acting on you. It also helps you with Number 1, it also reduces the amount of drag you face.

3. Pacing

Pacing yourself over a set distance can be the difference between being fast or slow. For example, if you are going to the the University campus which is about 5km away and you start off really fast while using a lot of energy, towards the end you will begin to slow down and it would take longer to reach. When you pace yourself, you are able to maintain a steady speed without sacrificing time or energy.

4. Wear Tighter Clothing

Bicycle kit

Wearing tight-fitting cycling clothes is designed to reduce heat and sweat which can hinder your performance; it makes it less tiring to ride. [1] Baggy clothing can also contribute to drag, because the more of you that is caught in the wind, the more that drag affects you.

5. Aerodynamic Bike

Aerodynamic bicycle

Compared to the other options above, this requires a bit of an investment. Getting a bike that has an aerodynamic frame and wheels cane help improve your speed. However most of your improvements will come from weight and body positioning.

Hopefully you learnt some new ways to beat your friends at a race or prepare of a competition. Make sure to keep fit and healthy and keep on riding!
