An Exciting Travel Guide – Interlaken, Switzerland

Heaven-on-earth? Well, what better place than Switzerland! Switzerland becomes the ninth international travel destination and the ninth part of this travel series!

Interlaken – June 2015

Age: 12 years

Point 1: Swiss Alps Valleys at Interlaken

You can not, possibly go to Switzerland and miss out on the Alps Valleys! They are often in the shadows of the mountains. Not just because they get less sun, but also because they by no means enjoy as much attention. Those who head into these local valleys will soon find that their wallflower status is totally unjustified.

The valleys are vast, green and exotic with hidden creeks and a rugged land that you can explore to your heart’s content! It is a spectacular panorama and the fragrance of the Alpine meadows – especially in summer – which is when we went, is just mesmerizing!

Point 2: Β Mount Titlis

Interlaken Titlis

Titlis is a mountain of the Uri Alps is one of the highest mountains in Switzerland as well as Europe. All you have to do is pick a train from Interlaken to Engelberg and then through mountains go to top of Titlis. The entire journey upwards is horribly thrilling and exciting and seems like the cart is going to fall back any moment!

On reaching Titlis, a rotair takes you across the Titlis snow-clad valleys and directly to the top of Mount Titlis. Although we went in summer, you would expect a snow-clad, high mountain to be chilling to your bones – however, as you can see in the picture – I was standing there in a sleeveless, chiffon top without being worried about cold. That’s the day I realized – it’s not cold if there’s no wind!

Titlis was absolutely windless at the peak and could be easily managed without a jacket if going in summer, but as you cross the peak to the Glacier Park, it starts getting chillier and windier and a jacket would be an essential. Here you can involve yourself in all types of sports such as skiing, sleddint and snow tubbing!

You can also walk through the glacier caves and just have the intense rock solid igloo feel!

P.S: Always keep your Titlis ticket with you cause you will need to scan it for all the rides and games!

Point 3: Jungfraujoch

Jungfraujoch

The Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe is one of the most exciting and amazing attractions in Switzerland. From Interlaken, you can take a train to Grindelwald Terminal (hey there, Potterheads πŸ˜‰ ) from where you can connect to Jungfrau (base of the mountain). Cogwheel trains and a cable car take you from Interlaken (at an altitude of 570 m) all the way up across several climate zones to the Jungfraujoch (at 3454 m).

The ride up the mountainous hills is very exciting and a great attraction for people who love rollercoasters and thrills. At certain junctions in the read up the cave to the Jungfraujoch, the train halts and you are allowed to get onto a slant platform from where you can get a few peeks at the height you have reached to. Not a perfect fit for people with acrophobia though.

Once at Jungfraujoch, a lift takes you 117 m further up to the Sphinx observatory. You can enjoy a 360Β° view here, both from the terrace and from the comfort of a building with panoramic windows. There is also an Ice Palace with many ice sculptures to admire.

Snow tubbing

The Alpine Sensation is a moving walkway with images, light and music, connecting the hall below the Sphinx observatory to the Ice Palace. As I went in summer, there was also a chance to once again have a go at sledging, skiing or snowboarding in the Snow Fun Park.

Also for those who love chocolates, The Lindt Swiss Chocolate Heaven, is where you can learn about the history of chocolate and how it’s made – and even try your hand at making chocolate yourself!

Also, since I spoke about the coldness at the previous mountain, it’s only fair I do so here as well! Jungfrau ad Jungfraujoch are two different places, we made a mistake by searching the temperature for Jungfrau which showed a very warm weather temperature – typical to a mountain base(something we didn’t know then)!

The top of the mountain, at the peak – Jungfraujoch is much, much colder and you will need all the winter wears and gloves you can have a hand at!

Best Moment:

I think it would be a close call between the first time sledging and snow tubbing (Titlis) and making my first snowman (Jungfraujoch)!
