A Poem: The Attentive but Devastating Hypothesis

Hypothesis

I need you to create a hypothesis here.

If I pushed you off the edge of the earth and you fell down down down where would you land?

When I lasso the stars out of the sky,

Cut the moon into slices of cheese for you,

Organize the universe into a pigeonholed pocket travel folder with a red permanent marker check on galaxies that we’ve already visited and a circle around the ones we have yet to see,

I will buy the ability to speak

So that if I could I would tell you how your eyelashes are like guitar strings and how elegant your guitar is and how much I wish I could stay up all night to listen to you play

If I could I would

Tell you how you about all the poetry I’ve written about you tucked away into a corner of a journal or the margins of my classwork.

But my words tumble and turn and twist in my mind

They crash against my cranium and create a cacophony

So that when I open my mouth all I say is silent noise.

How many people in our country – the land of the immigrants, the birthplace of the new dream, the great “melting pot” – can fluently speak their native tongue? Even if they do speak it at home, how many of those proud citizens will without shame utilize their beautiful language outside of the safe walls of home, out in the public eye where anyone can see, hear, and judge it? hypothesis
