Interview with Arya Talwakar

What was the inspiration for you to become a fitness coach?

The main reason I started working out was initially to look a certain way and mainly to look good but slowly as I started improving physically and mentally I realised that I started feeling happier about myself and my body and I started loving my body more than before because I knew that I was working hard and my hard work is paying off.

Then I thought to myself, it would be really amazing to provide this feeling of satisfaction and happiness to other people. That’s when I decided that I wanted to spread fitness in every way possible and take it to the next level because fitness isn’t just improving physically, it also means improving mentally. So with this goal in mind I became a fitness coach/health professional

Who is your role model?

I have two role models. When it comes to fitness I really look up to grandfather Mr.Madhukar Talwalkar. He is 87 years ‘young’ and still works out every single day and doesn’t miss a single workout session and his drive for fitness is what I really admire. Second role model is my mother Mrs.Sulekha Talwalkar. She goes to work everyday at 6am and comes back home really late and tired but still manages to give her family the love and support we require and that is what inspires me the most. These two are my role models and I really look up to them I want to instil myself with some qualities from them when I grow up.

You’re a fitness with a lot on your plate, how do you stay balanced (and not overwhelmed?

I believe that I have been given the opportunity to spread fitness on a large scale and I’m only 20 years old so I have the energy to do multiple things at one time and I’m grateful that I’m able to do those things whether it’s to shoot for YouTube videos for my channel or train people throughout the day or train myself or even study for my college exams I can do all this and much more and I’m really grateful for that.

Yes it does get overwhelming or tiring sometimes but when it does I keep telling myself, and this is a line from a song, “karega mehnat tu thodisi aaj,kal ko karega tu chaude main raaj” which roughly translates to, if you work a little harder today, you’ll be able to rule tomorrow. So this is what keeps me going.

What is your daily schedule like? Is it non-negotiable?

My day starts at 5:30 am as I have training at 6 am every day and throughout the day I have training sessions with various people. Around 5 pm every day I train myself and then again in the evening I have training sessions. Whenever I get time in the afternoon or on Sundays usually when I don’t have training I shoot videos for my YouTube channel and in between sessions I have at least 2 or sometimes 3 hours so I have my meals, rest and prepare myself for the next session.

Currently, I do have time in the afternoon to relax but I hope to soon fill that slot in so I can train in that time too. It honestly doesn’t feel like work as I love what I do and every session I take I give my all so that my clients can achieve their goals which is what my main goal is in the first place.

What according to you are the 5 workouts that can be done at home?

Right now as the gyms are closed we can’t workout in the gym and I really do miss it and I know you do too, but instead of sitting around doing nothing we can workout at home,t ry these variations. My 5 go-to home work variations are:

  • Squats: I’m a huge fan of squats and lower body variations so my number one is squats
  • Burpees: They’re exhausting but if done the right way they can be really effective
  • Crunches: Specifically to train your abdomen region I would recommend the traditional crunches with the proper breathing technique
  • Plank: If you ever feel a minute is too short I would highly recommend you to perform a plank
  • Surya namaskar: Our traditional variation to improve your overall flexibility, strength and fitness.

I highly recommend you to do these at home they require no equipment and can be done at anytime.

How to improve mind-muscle connection?

There are many ways to improve mind-muscle connection but I personally recommend this method. Whenever you’re performing any variation just close your eyes and actually FEEL that muscle. Feel every contraction and every movement that you’re making and keep focusing on that particular muscle. This will take some time but the more you practise the better you’ll be at this and once you attain that mind-muscle connection you will improve in a huge way and you’ll unlock a lot of things which will help you to become a better version of yourself.

On the road towards good health, what was one obstacle that was harder to overcome than others?

The biggest hardship that I had to overcome was diet-related mainly. It’s very easy to work out but quitting junk and sugar and following a proper diet is something that was the toughest for me because I wasn’t used to eating healthy at all. I was used to pizzas and doughnuts and going from that to eating clean was a task for me. But I believe you can do anything if you set your mind to it.0

This is something that I want everyone to understand that you are only limited by your mindset. I still crave for junk food and sugar and things are I’m not supposed to have on a daily basis but I don’t have it because I know that I’ve worked hard for this body and if I’m not going to let one craving let it all go to waste.

Every battle is initially lost or won mentally and if you think you can do it there’s nothing in this world that can stop you from emerging victorious. When it comes to fitness people often think they’ll not able to do it or they think it’s too tiring or time-consuming but if they just focus on the negatives they’re not going to be able to achieve anything in life.

Instead, look at the positives and try to find a solution because even the toughest problem has a solution if you have the right mindset. Your mindset is what matters the most and your mindset is something that you have to change or improve if you want to achieve greatness in fitness and in life. So I believe mindset is what holds most people back and is an obstacle but once you control your mindset and mould it in a positive way, you will be unstoppable.

One of the most common questions is: complex carbs are better than simple carbs, fact or myth – what is your take on it?

When it comes to nutrition and fitness there are no black and white answers and therefore when it comes to choosing between complex carbs and simple carbs there is no better or worse option as both are very important to the human body but at right times and if taken at the right time and in the right quantity it can have great effects on the human body.

Again the time and quantity depends from person to person as there is no ‘one size fits for all’ thing in fitness it all differs and depends from person to person and from body to body. Something that suits me might not suit your body and vice versa and thus I wouldn’t ever recommend you to follow a particular diet just because someone else is doing it whether it’s your friend or a celebrity.

Don’t follow a diet blindly, try it for yourself and see if you’re comfortable with it, if that diet suits your body well and then depending on the results choose to continue or stop.

What would you tell women who have been pressurized into having a curvy and full body? How would you motivate them?

Everybody is different and every body’s genes are different and that’s what makes us special. To the women who are pressurised into having a curvy body or to have a particular body type, I would like to say, don’t let anyone else tell you how you’re supposed to look. If you’re happy with your body and you’re healthy mentally that is what matters the most. Don’t let anyone pressurise or dictate you into looking a certain way.

Your happiness is what matters the most and no one else because in the end you are the only one who’s going to be looking at yourself in the mirror and it will be of no use if you’re not happy with what you see. And this is not just for women, for men too for every single person out there. You are your main priority and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Worship your body and keep it healthy but don’t let any person or society influence you into looking a certain way.

Workout to be fit and happy physically and mentally and most importantly workout to please yourself and not others. Your fitness and your mental health should be your first priority.

What makes you feel like the star version of yourself?

I always feel like the star version of myself and this is because I’m always hyping myself up and talking to myself and telling myself positive things which in turn help me to do great things and I’m only able to achieve those because I have that mindset. As I said earlier a proper mindset can do wonders and I’ve learned to have that mindset which makes me feel good when I wake up in the morning and makes me feel even better before sleeping at night.

One thing I would want everyone to do is keep talking to yourself, keep telling yourself that you are the best version of yourself and if you don’t feel like that, work towards it. Always have positive things to think about, things to be grateful about and always make yourself your first priority. All this will not happen quickly but once you slowly start thinking that way you will be on another level mentally.

Rapid Fire:

  • Your greatest weakness and strength
My greatest strength is that I never stress or panic over anything no matter how big or small (which sometimes always scares me) . I just think about finding a solution to it as quickly as possible. And I honestly don’t know my weakness as I haven’t ever dwelled on it.
  • Greatest accomplishment
I feel I accomplish a lot of things in my day to day life and that’s what keeps me going and all of that will soon make up for one great accomplishment
  • Your favourite workout
My all-time favourite workout has to be pull-ups
