Interview with Tom Wlaschiha
What or who inspired you to become an actor and have you always wanted to be an actor?
The idea crossed my mind pretty early on. I always knew I wanted to do something artistic. I had an uncle who was a successful opera singer and got to travel the world with his job, so maybe I was inspired by him a little bit. But since I only sing under the shower, I then chose to give acting a try.
How do you prepare for a role?
That always depends. Some roles are closer to myself than others. Generally, I already try to visualize a character when I first read the script and then I try to figure out what makes this particular character interesting, e.g. how does he walk and talk, what is his speech pattern.
How often do you run lines or practice your skit?
I memorize my lines loosely before I go to set, but I try to not run them too often on my own before. It takes away spontaneity later on and the ability to truly react to your partner and improvise in the scene when you have too many preconceived ideas in your head.
Which character did you like to play the most?
Ha ! Always the one I´m working on at the moment. But if I had to chose, I´d say that Jaqen H’Ghar in GoT was definitely one of my favorites, because he was such a weird and cool character and the scripts were incredibly well written. Also, the whole face changing business was quite intriguing.
Has a character you played ever altered your personality?
I hope not :)) In recent years I mostly got to play villains or morally unstable people, so I hope that hasn´t tainted my personality. But who am I to say, you´d have to ask my friends and family to be really sure!
What makes a good co-star?
The understanding that a scene only works best when egos stay at home. I like to work with actors who´ll do anything to make a scene great even if that requires being vulnerable and showing weaknesses. Same goes for myself of course.
What was your very first performance like?
OMG! I´d rather not talk about it! It was actually in my first year in drama school and the audience cheered after I´d played my scene. I was quite flustered, but later on was told it wasn´t because of my great performance but rather because I had talked in my strong home dialect. At the time I was completely unaware I even had a dialect.
Let me tell you a very similar experience I had Tom. I have been living in Lagos, Nigeria since I was 7. Yet, even in Lagos, I was in an Indian school and had a very strong Indian accent that I was completely unaware of. At 16, I changed my school to join a British school, and my first public speaking and hosting event within 3 weeks of joining the school was exactly the same! I received a loud applause but believe me, it was because of my accent not cause of my performance!
Woww! Haha! That’s exactly the same thing I went through. Guess that makes two of us!
Anyway, what’s your dream role?
Always the next one as it´s the one that gives me food for thought and work. It´s fun creating a character. But I always prefer the antagonist over the hero. Conflicted people with issues are much more interesting. Heroes can be quite boring at times.
When you were called back to join Game of Throne Season 5, did you predict it back when you got your first role in the show?
No way! No one knew this, not even the producers. A show gets renewed every season by the network based on its success. There was no way of knowing initially how many seasons of GoT would be made. But of course I always kept my fingers crossed and hoped for a return. Needless to say when it happened I was very excited!
Can you still remember bits of High Valyrian or do you still get called a man?
I still get called a man a lot by fans. I dont mind it because its a sign of appreciation. I try not to talk too much in the third person about myself, though and I admit that I´ve never mastered High Valyrian to full extent. But Valar Morghulis and Valar Dohaeris have got me by so far.
Your next project is Stranger Things, what is it like being able to be part of yet another huge franchise?
It´s very exciting and I´m extremely grateful for the opportunity. It’s kind of a dream to be able to play in shows that you´ve been a fan of yourself. And it’s not a spoiler when I say that the season ahead will be amazing!
What are your most memorable moments of playing?
- Jaqen Hagh’r in Game of Thrones
Walking those perfectly built sets propelled me into another world instantly. - Sebastien Berger in Crossing Lines
Struggling with all the tech speak. Personally I´m a complete disaster when it comes to computers and everything that goes with it. - Albrecht in Resistance
Playing opposite the incredible Andrea Riseborough. It was one of my first films in the UK and a great experience. We filmed with a relatively small team in a completely secluded valley in Wales amidst breathtaking landscapes. - Max Schenkel in Jack Ryan
Definitely the action bits. I´d never done that before and I loved chasing John Krasinski and being chased by him.
